Funding Autistic Futures: How California’s Self-Determination Program Covers Personalized Therapy

Transitioning into young adulthood is a pivotal phase for any individual, but for young adults on the autism spectrum, it requires a highly tailored approach. Traditional, one-size-fits-all programs often fall short of addressing the unique goals, strengths, and daily living skills required for meaningful independence.

At our practice, we specialize in providing clinical, evidence-based therapy designed specifically for young adults navigating this transition. Many families are unaware that these specialized services—along with other supportive therapies, coaching, and skill-building activities—can be fully funded with zero out-of-pocket costs through California’s Self-Determination Program (SDP).

What is the Self-Determination Program (SDP)?

Grounded in California’s landmark Lanterman Act, the Self-Determination Program is a voluntary delivery model funded through the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) and administered by local Regional Centers.

Unlike traditional Regional Center models where services are restricted to pre-approved, vendorized providers, SDP places the participant and their family in the driver’s seat.

  • Individualized Budgets: Your Regional Center calculates an individual budget based on the historical cost of traditional services.

  • Complete Autonomy: You control how that budget is spent. You select the providers, the clinical modalities, and the environment that best support your young adult's specific developmental and transition goals.

  • No Out-of-Pocket Costs: All approved services, including specialized therapy, social skills coaching, and independent living support, are paid directly from the SDP budget via a Financial Management Service (FMS).

Tailored Therapy for Young Adults with Autism

The primary advantage of utilizing SDP funding for our services is the ability to customize intervention. Young adulthood requires a focus on functional, real-world outcomes. Through SDP, we can design clinical interventions that target:

  • Executive Functioning: Managing schedules, organizing daily tasks, and building cognitive flexibility.

  • Social Communication & Professional Integration: Navigating workplace dynamics, developing peer relationships, and self-advocacy.

  • Independent Living Skills: Emotional regulation, anxiety management, and community integration.

Because SDP allows for flexible environments, therapy does not have to be confined to a clinic. It can take place where the young adult needs it most—whether that is in the community, at a job site, or during academic transitions.

Navigating the Process:

Transitioning to the Self-Determination Program requires collaboration. Families do not have to navigate this administrative process alone. The SDP framework utilizes key professionals to ensure success:

  • Independent Facilitators (IF): An IF helps you navigate the transition from traditional services to SDP. They assist in writing the Person-Centered Plan (PCP), negotiating the individual budget with the Regional Center, and locating qualified clinical providers like our practice. (Note: Independent Facilitator fees are also covered directly by your SDP budget).

  • Financial Management Services (FMS): The FMS acts as the fiscal agent, managing the budget, paying bills, and processing payments to your chosen therapists and support staff.

Taking the Next Step

If your young adult is already a Regional Center

consumer, they are eligible to transition into the Self-Determination Program. If they are not yet registered with a Regional Center but have a diagnosis of autism, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, or an intellectual disability, the first step is securing eligibility under the Lanterman Act.

We are committed to helping young adults with autism thrive during their transition years. By leveraging the Self-Determination Program, you can access our specialized clinical services without financial strain.
